What's happening at the Fair?

2012 has been a very busy year with a long list of projects completed by a wonderful crew of volunteers and employees. I look forward to the new projects planned for completion in 2013 and wish everyone in our community a Happy New Year!

If you would like to help plan the 2013 Fair, now is a good time to become a Fair Board member, pick up an application at the Wahkiakum County Commissioners office or call 795-8048 for more information. The Fair board meets monthly, meetings last up to 1 1/2 hours. Your interest and expertise are needed! If you have ideas for our Fair and would like to see them happen, turn in an application. If you are new to our community, don’t hesitate to fill out an application, you will make lots of new friends and we need your new ideas, too. If you aren’t selected, you can still come to the meetings and join one of our many committees.

The Fairgrounds has been a busy place over Christmas break. Each day the arena is filled with horses and their riders. Some riding just for fun and others are putting in some hours of training with their horses in our big covered arena. It’s a nice place to ride when the weather forecast is showing rain and more rain!

Attention all horse owners that train and ride their horses at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds Arena: On January 1, I will be putting a new lock on the horse gate. If you would like to use the arena in 2013 its time to purchase a new key, the cost is a bargain at $50 a year. You will be able to use the arena year round except when we have a scheduled event in the arena. The events will be posted on the reader board inside the arena to keep you informed. Call Becky at 360-560-0371/795-3480, leave your name, phone number, message and we can meet at the fairgrounds and complete the paperwork.

On February 9 you can spend a fine evening with your loved one at the fabulous “Valentine Diamond Dinner” held at the Skamokawa Grange. Our dinner menu: Bacon wrapped filet mignon, baked potato with all the fixings, salad, rolls, dessert and a glass of wine or other beverage. Cost is only $25 per dinner ticket and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a diamond bracelet. We have purchased the bracelet for this event and it is beautiful! You can purchase more raffle tickets for the diamond bracelet at $1 each during the dinner, these tickets can only be bought exclusively by our dinner guests. Dinner tickets are available to purchase at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific, or from Fair Board members or call Becky at 795-3434/560-0371 to get your tickets. All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fundraising events will go directly toward supporting and maintaining your 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is January 9, at 7 p.m., Wahkiakum County Court House, 3rd floor meeting room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
