What's happening at the Fair?

The bright colored lights decorating the fairgrounds and Skamokawa Grange Hall were beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the huge crowd of people attending had a great time. Last weekend’s Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a success, hope you attended. Special thanks to Ed Stevens for decorating the fairgrounds and surrounding neighborhood with a multitude of sparkling Christmas lights.

It’s time to open up the rummage and book sale! We have received many generous donations of reusable items; a microwave, a bread machine, a roaster oven, star wars paperbacks, a coffee bean grinder, baby clothes, dog collars, leashes, kids rubber boots, Christmas ornaments, glasses, mugs, plates, pans, movies, shoes and the list could continue. Stop by the T-building at the Fairgrounds, this Saturday, December 15th, 11:00 to 4:00, see what’s new and purchase some treasures at bargain prices. At this weekend’s sale all books are three for $1 and a section of childrens books are three for 25 cents. All proceeds support your 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

Firewood raffle tickets will also be for sale at the rummage and book sale. The raffle prize is a cord of alder firewood. Raffle tickets are $1 each and the winning ticket will be drawn at the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The Wahkiakum County Commissioners at their regular Tuesday meeting reappointed Joe Blalock, Janet Bryan and Shawn Merz to the Fair Board for three year terms. Joe and Janet have volunteered many hours planning and staffing fundraising events in 2012. Shawn created a new fundraising event called the “Horsemanship Challenge” that brought in a new source of funding for our Fair. Janet, Joe and Shawn have been active board members and they have suggested many new ideas to the Fair Board. We look forward to the next three years as they help plan Fair Board fundraising events and influence important decisions.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board fundraising event will be the Valentine Diamond Dinner. The dinner will be held on February 9th, 2013 at the beautiful Skamokawa Grange Hall.

This is my favorite event! We spend weeks planning, decorating and gathering special items for this event. It’s well worth the effort as we welcome our guests to a dinner prepared and served by Fair Board members and friends. Tickets will be ready to purchase soon.

Last night the Fair Board elected their 2013 officers! The new officers names will have to be listed in my next week’s column as the results came in after this column had to be submitted.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is January 9th, 7:00 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Court House, 3rd floor meeting room in Cathlamet. The public is welcome to attend.
