Mule start playoffs with one win, one loss

The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team opened district tournament play with a 3-1 over Raymond but fell 3-2 to South Bend in a semifinal match on Tuesday.

The Mules will play Morton/White Pass in a loser-out match at 5 p.m. today (Thursday) in Onalaska. With a victory, the Mules would play an opponent to be determined for a state berth at 8 p.m.

The Mules beat Raymond 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 in the first round. Hailey Quigley had 12 points, seven kills and five aces; setter Haylee Budd made 33 assists and Tori Wegdahl had 19 kills.

The Mules rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take South Bend to the wire before losing 3-2 in the semifinals. Scores were 23-25, 17-25, 26-24, 25-10, 15-13.

Wegdahl made 13 kills; Baylee Olsen had 11 kills, and Kaylee Bryant made five.

The Mules closed the regular season October 24 with a quick 3-0 win over a young Toledo team that had no seniors and only one junior on the roster. Scores were 25-10, 25-11, 25-11. It was senior night for players Haylee Budd, Marissa Washington, Amy Gawith and Hailey Quigley and Manager Kati Cothren.
