What's Happening at the Fair?

Even as the rains pour down the admission ticket booth continues to be a work in progress each day at the fairgrounds. Ben Vasion and his crew are working each night after school to complete an Eagle Scout project.

With the old ticket booth removed, the crew went right to work on the foundation of the new booth. They are using pressure treated beams to support the floor. First they drilled into the concrete and added bolts that connect the concrete to the beams. Next the flooring was screwed down onto the beams. The wall structures were framed in, sheeted with an exterior siding and set into their places on the flooring. The door was built and attached with hinges. Then the framing for the roof was put into place, they attached the metal roofing and built the ticket counter. When a day of dry weather appeared they were able to get a coat of primer on most of the exterior siding and also on the wood inside the booth. What’s left to do? Two big posts that will support the roof overhang need to be attached to the building and anchored to the ground, a rigid insulation installed under the metal roof, lights, a low inside counter installed and lattice will be used to help block wind, sun and rain. When that’s all done just a couple coats of paint will complete the project. I am hoping the weather will cooperate and very soon we will have a nice looking new ticket booth at our entrance gate!

The Two Islands Farmers Market was a great place to sell the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's smoked salmon last Friday! I sold every package I brought to the market. I have about 25 packages of this delicious smoked salmon left and plan to set up at the market tomorrow. The packages sell for $4 to $7 depending on the size of the pieces. This could be your last chance to purchase this tasty smoked salmon!

Last Saturday, it was rainy and cold outside, yet it was a very good day to stop by the rummage and book sale at the Fairgrounds T-building. The T-building is full of donated items we are selling to raise funding to support the operation of our 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair. Each week we receive new donated items, the sale will be open every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., until it starts snowing and the roads start getting icy. Stop by, we probably have the item you’ve been trying to find for years on our tables. If you have some good reusable items to donate, please give me a call or bring them by our Saturday sales. Helping to staff the sale last Saturday was Joe Blalock. Thanks, Joe!

Be sure to cash your fair premium check before November 10. The account will be closed on November 11.

We have purchased the Turkey Bingo Grand raffle prize. This year the Fair Board decided to raffle a Sears Kenmore stainless steel and porcelain propane barbecue. The barbecue has a cooking grill, a searing burner, a warming rack and a side burner. Everything you need to cook a fine lunch or dinner all contained in this nice looking barbecue grill. Raffle tickets are only $1 each and will be sold at our Turkey Bingo fund raiser on November 16, at the J. A. Wendt School in the multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6 p.m. and Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m. At the end of the evening a ticket will be drawn and one lucky person will take home a new Sears Kenmore barbecue.

The Fairgrounds is open for limited hours in October. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371, or you can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.
