What's Happening at the Fair?

The weather was very wet and rainy last Saturday, but that did not stop Boy Scout Troop #883 from meeting at the fairgrounds to start an Eagle Scout project.

Scout Ben Vasion needed to complete a project and asked me for project ideas a few weeks ago. We discussed a few projects, then Ben decided he would like to tear down the admission gate ticket booth and build a new one. The ticket booth had a rotten floor, the walls were in bad shape and this project needed to be completed before we could safely use the booth again. Looking over the project plans, Ben wanted to make some improvements to the original design. Ben's improvements were good ideas and our ticket takers will really appreciate them next year!

A good sized crew will be working with Ben over the next week including Adam Vasion, Nevan Bingham, Novella Hokkanen, Dennis Nagasawa, Wendy Vasion, Bryan Hokkanen, Patrick Carrico and Iris Hokkanen. Last Saturday the crew knocked down the old ticket booth, put a tent up over the site and started building the floor for the new ticket booth. Their plans are to continue working on the project each day after school until completed rain or shine!

We have purchased the Turkey Bingo grand raffle prize! This year, the Fair Board decided to raffle a Sears Kenmore stainless steel and porcelain propane barbecue. The barbecue has a cooking grill, a searing burner, a warming rack and a side burner. Everything you need to cook a fine lunch or dinner all contained in this nice looking barbecue grill! Raffle tickets are only $1 each and will be sold at our Turkey Bingo fund raiser on November 16, at the J. A. Wendt School in the multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6 p.m. and bingo begins at 6:30 p.m. At the end of the evening a ticket will be drawn and one lucky person will take home a new Sears Kenmore barbecue!

Janet Bryan and Kay Chamberlain will be putting together some delicious snacks in the kitchen for you to enjoy during the bingo. Every bingo winner will receive a turkey or a ham as their bingo prize. We also have a multiple prize raffle table. Multi-prize raffle tickets are only $1 each and will be drawn throughout the evening. Join us for a fun evening, for a good cause. Turkey Bingo is a Wahkiakum County Fair Board Event, all funds raised will directly support the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

Fair board members are always looking for new ways to bring in funding to support our fair and now we have a new Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raiser. We are selling delicious smoked sockeye salmon. This great tasting smoked salmon comes in packages that cost $4 to $7, depending on the size of the pieces you are purchasing. To place an order, call the fairgrounds and leave your name, phone number and a short message. Great for lunch snacks and little gifts to give to friends!

Ed Stevens and I have been pulling item after item out of a mountain of boxes, then arranging the items so you can browse through and purchase them at our next Wahkiakum County Fair Book and Rummage Sale. We will be open on October 20 , from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are lots of new interesting items to purchase and hundreds of good reading books you’ll want to take home and read this winter too. We just received several boxes of clean, cute baby clothes. If you are an artist and need some attractive frames, we have them, in lots of sizes, fancy ornate to nice wooden ones. We also have boxes of dog collars, leads, dishes, special training collars and toys. Our tables are once again full of nice items, come take a look. We will also be selling smoked salmon at these sales too. If you have some good reusable items to donate, please give me a call.

The fairgrounds is open for limited hours in October. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371, or you can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.
