The Wahkiakum Mules boosted their 2012 football season record to 5-0 with a 49-27 win over the visiting Onalaska Loggers last Friday night.
The Loggers fielded a big, bruising team, but they couldn't stop the Mules. Wahkiakum averaged 13 yards per play on offense.
Wingback Peter Weiler led the attack with four touchdowns and 221 yards gained on six carries; one touchdown was a 49-yard punt return.
Steven Doumit carried the ball three times and gained 94 yards with one touchdown; Austin Good gained 89 yards on five carries, and Lars Blix picked up 24 yards on four runs, including a two-yard touchdown.
Onalaska looked tough at the start, and Cody Burton ripped off a 57 yard touchdown run at 11:07 of the first quarter.
The Mules responded with two quick Weiler touchdowns, one a 56-yard run, and one an 88-yard run.
In the second quarter, Doumit scored on a 56-yard run; Weiler returned a punt 49 yards for a score, and, after Onalaska had scored on a good drive, Blix passed to Travis Wegdahl for a 24-yard touchdown.
The Mules led 35-13 at halftime. They continued the onslaught in the third quarter with Blix's quarterback sneak and a 19-yard Weiler run.
Leading 49-13, Mule Coach Eric Hansen put in the junior varsity, and the Loggers tacked on two more scores to complete the 49-27 game.
The Mules gained 482 yards total on offense. The varsity had piled up 401 yards rushing on 20 plays. Overall, the Mules had 428 yards rushing and 54 yards on three pass completions.
Blix completed three of six passes for 54 yards and one touchdown. Wegdahl caught two for 53 yards; Good caught another for one yard.
The Mules had no fumbles, and they were called for seven penalties for 55 yards.
Onalaska had 337 yards rushing on 45 carries and 19 yards on three passes. The Loggers were called for seven penalties for 35 yards and fumbled five times, losing four.
On defense, Bubba Calvert led in tackles with 13, Mason Mackey had 11, Nathan Cothren and Dylan Hansen 10 each, Doumit nine and Blix eight.
The Mules broke a long drought against Onalaska; they apparently hadn't beaten the Loggers since 1979's playoffs. They have another chance to reverse current history when they go to Napavine to play the Tigers, where they haven't won in years.
The Tigers have perhaps the best front line in the league, Hansen said, but injuries have hurt their backfield.
"They're still a very tough team," Hansen said.
