Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
After nearly a month without rain, we drove in from Oregon on Sunday evening and looking to the west, sure enough, the rain was back. Not much though, just enough to irritate the farmers who are still making hay.
News from Naselle:
Before school begins for the 2012/13 year, many will be enjoying a last long weekend and finishing up their school shopping. Then back to the books. Here’s to a fantastic new school year.
The first day of school will be on Tuesday. Check with the school office if you have questions about classes or bus schedules.
Sports are already underway for the new year. Here is the line up for the first week: Tuesday-cross country Home Jamboree at 4 p.m. in Naselle and volleyball with Wahkiakum at 5:45 p.m., also in Naselle; September 6-volleyball at Knappa at 5:30 p.m. Go Comets.
The Naselle Lutheran Church will be holding their Labor Day Weekend Garage Sale on Saturday, September 1 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the church located at 308 Knappton Road in Naselle. Check out all they have to offer as well as coffee and baked goods which will also be available. Proceeds from this event will be used for painting and roof maintenance on the Church.
Other news from the Westend:
The floors of the gymnasium at Johnson Park will be refinished on Tuesday so the gym will be off limits for a few days. We hope this will not be too much of an inconvenience to the folks who regularly use the facility.
The Grays River Valley Library will also be closed on Tuesday as the odors from the floor refinishing are very pungent and have a tendency to permeate the area. We will be airing out the building with fans and hope to reopen on September 6 at 1 p.m. Thank you for your patience.
Other meetings coming up at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) include: the Red Cross group will meet on September 10 at 9 a.m. and the Photography Group will meet at 1 p.m. on September 12.
The Johnson Park Advisory Board will host “Oktoberfest” on October 13. An authentic German sauerbraten dinner will be prepared by Steve and Linda Ramsay as well as accompanying side dishes. A limited number of tickets will be sold, and you can reserve one now by calling Steve Ramsay at 465-2731, Penny Gregory at 465-2775 or me at 465-2960. Tickets are $10 each and include a raffle ticket for a cord of wood, to be given away at the dinner. Extra raffle tickets are also available for purchase. This is a fund raiser for the park, and proceeds will be used for maintenance and operating expenses for the building and grounds.
Are you looking for a place to hold a meeting, have a family reunion, wedding reception, birthday party, or whatever, where you need larger accommodations? Please contact our events coordinator Judy Durrah at 465-2331. She will let you know if the area or room is available when you need it. Calendars are posted in the hallways at the north and west end of the old school building, with the ongoing activities that are available to you.
The seventh annual Buzzard’s Breath Chili Cook-off will be held on September 1 at the marina in Cathlamet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Lots of fun for everyone. For more info call 795-9996.
The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will enjoy spaghetti, green salad, garlic bread and dessert on September 5; on September 12 they will feast on home made chicken and dumplings, veggies and dessert.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior lunches are also served at the above location and are sponsored by CAP. Today’s menu will include pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, baked beans and berry crisp.

Last Saturday, our grand daughter became the bride of Scott Hueners in Terrebonne, Ore. It was truly a unique setting, as the bride and groom wanted a country themed wedding. The seating for the ceremony were hay bales lined up in a sand pit which later turned in to a volleyball court, and the vows were taken in front of an old rusty 1928 truck decorated with hay bales and sunflowers (it was actually driven to the location and later driven around with kids on it). The crowd was treated to a delicious barbecue of lamb, pork and chicken with lots of other side dishes prepared by the family members and also enjoyed kegs of beer brewed by her parents and aunt and uncle, who will be opening their Smith Rock Brewing Company in early October, especially for the wedding. It was a wonderful day with her entire family and his in attendance to wish the newlyweds well. Amazingly it was a melding of two very like minded families and we look forward to many more fun events together.
Marlee looked like a china doll in her beautiful gown, and her bouquet of sunflowers. But after the ceremony was over, the redneck wine glasses came out, and the fun began. She climbed aboard a horse (yes, in her wedding garb) and gave the little kids a horsey ride around the property. Talk about a sight, that was really something. She looked like a princess on a horse, and seemed to be having as much fun as the little kids. We enjoyed visiting with all of our kids and some that we consider ours as well. It was a wonderful weekend.
Congratulations to Marlee and Scott Hueners who make their home in Redmond, Ore. with their three year old son Ezekiel. You are a beautiful family and we love you.
