Fund raising garage sale for Kenzie Saturday

Have you had a chance to watch any of the meteor showers this week? With the clear skies most evenings, we have been enjoying a few sightings while sitting in the hot tub. What a relaxing way to spend the evening.

I hope you have also taken advantage of the beautiful, warm weather this past week, but it looks like another weather alert for today with extremely warm temps. Remember to make sure your animals have lots of opportunity to get out of the heat and have access to fresh water.

News from Naselle:

I had an opportunity to try out the new Mochas & More coffee shop at the junction of SR 4 and SR 401 last weekend and was very pleased with my purchase and the friendly demeanor of Laura Rey, the owner. She plans to serve some food items to go with her wide variety of beverages, so stop in and see what she has to offer and give her suggestions if you have any.

Check out what the Naselle Lutheran Church has to offer at their Labor Day Weekend Garage Sale. The event will be held on September 1 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Church located at 308 Knappton Road in Naselle. Coffee and baked goods will also be available. Proceeds from the sale will be used for painting and roof maintenance on the church.

For parents and new students at Naselle-Grays River Valley School District, please remember that you can register on Friday, the 17th at 9 a.m. for classes. Naselle will also be doing Kindergarten screening on the 17th at 9:30 a.m.

Cross country and volleyball practice begins on Monday.

The first day of the new school year is September 4. I understand that school supply lists are available at the Warrenton Fred Meyer store. If you know of a student that is in need of school supplies please contact the school.

Other news from the Westend:

The Wahkiakum County Fair opens today, and runs through Saturday in Skamokawa. Bring the whole family and partake of the wonderful entertainment, displays of canned foods, flowers, photos, animals and take time to grab a great meal of barbecue salmon. This fair is all about community, so let’s make it so, and support it to the fullest.

Thanks to the great job that has been done by the fair board, the fair manager, the volunteers and especially to all those who will be attending. See you there.

On Saturday, there will be another fundraising garage sale put on by James and Lorinda Alexander of Cathlamet, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This sale is a continuing effort to purchase a service dog for their daughter, Kenzie. The event will be held at 7 Suncrest Lane. This young lady needs our support to bring a service dog into her life that will help her be more independent. For more information please call 795-0575.

How about a fun family evening at the Grays River United Methodist Church located at 3624 SR 4 in Grays River? The church will be hosting a barbecue on August 25 at 6 p.m. Among other things on the menu, they will serve hot dogs and s’mores. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for this to be an outdoor event. Along with the food and friendship, there will be music and a sing-along.

It’s still early yet, but I want to give the readers a heads up for the next fund raiser at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Mark your calendar for October 13, when the board will host Oktoberfest. This evening will include an authentic meal of German Sauerbraten with other authentic side dishes, prepared by Steve and Linda Ramsay. A limited number of tickets will be sold, and you can reserve one now by calling Steve Ramsay at 465-2731, Penny Gregory at 465-2775 or me at 465-2960. More info coming soon and tickets will also be available soon.

With a dinner ticket you will also receive a chance to win a cord of wood being donated by Delvin Fredrickson.

The Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center are open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each week. We would like to reopen on Saturdays but need a few more volunteers. If you can spare a couple of hours per week please let me know and we can work with your schedule.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will be enjoying their monthly pot luck lunch on the 22nd. Bring a dish to share and try a new one brought by one of your neighbors. Pot lucks are always an adventure, and so much fun. On the 29th Pat Potter and her volunteers will serve a manwich on a bun with coleslaw, fruit and dessert to all the lunch goers.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, CAP sponsors the Rosburg Senior Community Lunches at the above location. Menus for the coming week: Today (Thursday) there will be no lunch as they are closed for the Wahkiakum County Fair. On Tuesday, the 21st-beef Yakisoba, Asian slaw, Mandarin oranges and raspberry mousse; Thursday, the 23rd-chili, fiesta veggies, spinach salad, cornbread and tapioca pudding. Come check out these nutritious meals served at the two venues and meet your friends and neighbors.

They are official and are hoping to open their brew pub and restaurant by October 1 in Redmond, Ore. Check them out on the web and on Facebook. Thanks to Bobbie Caton, they now have six prep tables that were purchased from her as she liquidated her inventory at Creative Flaire in Naselle. Best of luck to you and your family as you go forward, Bobbie.
