Cooks needed for chili cook-off

Cooks are needed for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce's Ninth Annual Labor Day “Buzzards Breath” Chili Cook Off in Cathlamet. The event, which this year is a Tolbert Sanctioned event, will be held at the Elochoman Slough Marina on September 1. There is no cost to enter. Cooking starts at 10 a.m. and the public will start tasting at 1 p.m. with judging at 3 p.m. There will also be a tortilla throwing contest, live music, beer garden, rubber duck race raffle, and wooden boat raffle.

begin next week

Middle School Football

Middle School football practice starts August 20 and runs from 4-6 p.m. all week. There will be a parent meeting August 19 at the middle school gym starting at 7 p.m. which should last about 30 minutes.

All student athletes will be required to have a physical within the last two years, signed concussion form, proof of insurance form, and a signed athletic contract. There will be copies available at the Parent Meeting. There is also a pay to play fee to be paid before the first game.

High School Cross Country

Cross Country practice for high school and middle school runners will begin August 20 at 4 p.m. in front of the high school.

Participants will be required to sign eligibility papers, if not done already, and take part in a light work out. Proper shoes and water are recommended.

Middle School Volleyball

Seventh and eighth grade girls turning out for Warrior volleyball will meet in the John C. Thomas middle school gym on August 22 at 4 p.m. to go over paperwork and turn in physicals, proof of insurance, and concussion forms.

At 5 p.m. there will be a mandatory parent meeting to sign paperwork and go over scheduling for the season.

Forest Stewardship Planning workshop set

A workshop series is offered to help landowners learn useful information about their natural resources.

Participants will write their own Forest Stewardship Plan with guidance and “coaching” by natural resource professionals. The short course consists of eight sessions held in the evening, one night a week on Wednesdays from September 12 till November 12 from 6:30-9 p.m.

The workshop is being held at Cowlitz County Training Center in Longview and will cost $160 per person, family, or land parcel. Fee includes a Forest Stewardship Handbook, aerial photos and maps of your property, and handouts. Space is limited to the first 30 ownerships on a first-come, first-served basis. Until September 5, the American Red Cross will continue its Ticket to Summer Fun sweepstakes promotion for people donating blood or platelets.

The promotion includes monthly drawings for $100 gift certificates and daily drawings for movie ticket four packs, both to the movie theater of the winners' choice. Promotion drawing entries will also be entered into the $2,500 Dream Vacation sweepstakes.

Conservation District

meeting rescheduled

The September 2012 board meeting for the Wahkiakum Conservation District will be held on September 5 at 4 p.m. at the district office, due to the Labor Day holiday.

Stella museum revisits Remnants of the Past

The Stella Historical Society will open its buildings, including the post office, blacksmith shop and machine shed, on weekends until the end of August between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

They will hold their annual fund raiser, Remnants of the Past, on September 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will raise funds for building restoration and will feature a working blacksmith. There will also be activities at the nearby Stella Lutheran Chapel including museum tours, craft demonstrations, raffles and a farmers' market and bake sale. Society members will act as docents, led by historian Gaye Richards.

Admission donations are adults $3, children five to 12 years fifty cents and under fives are free.

International soprano and pianist to perform at LCC

Soprano soloist Charlotte Pistor from Salzburg, Austria, and Dr. Alexandre Dossin, associate professor of piano at the University of Oregon, will play at the Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College on September 7 at 7:30 p.m. at their concert, Water Songs in Life, Love and Legend.

The performance will feature Pistor singing favorite and rare art songs (Lieder) from Austria, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States, accompanied by Dossin on the Rose Center’s Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano. A reception to meet the artists will follow the concert in the Rose Center foyer.

Tickets are just $5 and are available online at http://www.lowercolumbia.edu/bookstore; in person at the Encore Concessions in the Rose Center, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and one hour before the performance at the Rose Center Box Office. The special concert is sponsored by the Lower Columbia College Foundation as part of the Ken and Pat Hanson Memorial Music Series. Proceeds from the performance will assist the Foundation in providing scholarships and program funding to enhance the performing arts at LCC.
