Lots of smiles combined with sunshine to light the annual Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet’s Scholarship Golf Tournament on July 7, at the Skyline Golf Course in Cathlamet. Kiwanis hosts the event to raise funds for its scholarship awards to outstanding Wahkiakum High School graduating seniors. Golfers from near and far teamed up to have fun and enjoy some friendly competition using the “four-person scramble” format. Winners of the several categories were:
• KP (Closest to Pin) on holes 4 &13: John Collier.
• KP on holes 3 & 12: David McNally.
• Longest Drive: Sam Shelton.
Four of the teams were very closely-matched. First Place (Score – 61) was David McNally, Steve McNally, Dan Doumit, and Shannon Moore; Second place (Score 62) was a three-way tie between Wayne Cochran, Bryson Coleman, Marsha Cleveland and Danny Fey; Walter Deege, Lowell Williams, Jerry Roberts, and Richard Erickson; and James Baker, Josh Watilo, Mike Shelton, and Sam Shelton.
After the tournament, the golfers enjoyed a picnic luncheon of subs, potato salad and baked beans from Sharon’s Pizza and More. Prizes donated by area businesses and the Kiwanis Club were awarded to the winners, followed by a charity drawing for sports apparel, good wines, and certificates for local food and tonsorial emporiums.
This year’s tournament project was led by Kiwanis Club member Don Conway, and assisted by Kiwanians Carol Danker, Maureen Zacher-Bockius, MaryAnn and Rick Nelson, and Dick Swart. Kiwanis is an international service organization dedicated to serving children and youth of the world, one community at a time.
