Campaign highlights domestic violence, sexual assault

“Domestic violence and sexual assault are real problems,” asserts Susan Schillios, manager of The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center.

“We can all play a part in prevention. It isn’t just about women standing up for women. This is a human issue and we can all do or say something to stand up against it. We all have women in our lives that we care about, mothers, sisters, aunts, friends and girlfriends. The Charlotte House also provides services to men.

"We know that men are victims, unfortunately it is difficult for men to come forward to ask for support, but we want male victims to know that we are here for them and will provide them with the same services we do for women.”

Schillios, and prevention specialist Renae Hauff, along with Kim Anderson, Legal Advocate, are wrapping up a month long Sexual Assault Awareness Program.

The campaign sought to get the community involved with teal ribbons, stickers, and bookmarks. Mule softball and baseball players wore teal socks while golfers fastened up their golf shoes with teal laces. The color teal is recognized nationally and is meant to help start conversations about sexual violence - the first step in raising awareness.

“Prevention is something that we carry out all year long,” says Hauff, “Sexual Assault Awareness Month is really a campaign to start the discussion again.”

With the support of St. James Family Center, Hauff is leading a prevention program with local students which centers on education.

“There are certain behaviors,” Hauff explains, “like bullying and victim patterns that can carry over into adult relationships. We’re trying to eliminate gender stereotypes and other underlying conditions that can lead to unhealthy relationships.

"We use interactive and fun activities when working with students to help them understand that they can play a part in preventing violence in relationships.

"We want the kids to feel comfortable and for their questions to be well received. The teachers and administration in the Wahkiakum School District have been supportive of our goal and mission, we are very thankful to them for allowing us to work with the students. We also are working with various organizations throughout the county in an effort to let survivors know that our community cares."

The Charlotte House provides shelter and/or services for women and children who are victims of family violence. These confidential services include legal advocacy, medical and social services, referrals and counseling. On the national register for domestic violence shelters, victims come from all over the country seeking refuge from abusive relationships. Due to victim blaming and negative reactions many injured parties do not come forward.

St. James Family Center/The Charlotte House is Wahkiakum County’s community sexual assault program. The staff provides legal, medical and general advocacy to survivors and parents of survivors of sexual assault.

Schillios asserts, “Our services are free and confidential, survivors can call us for information and support without making a report to law enforcement. If an arrest is made, we have legal advocates available to help them through the court process.

"We have trained volunteers and staff who are willing to sit, listen and safety plan. We want to help in whatever way possible.”

“All of us have a role in building safe, healthy relationships and communities. When we start the conversation about healthy sexuality and relationships, we raise awareness,” Hauff said.
