What's Happening at the Fair?

The rummage and book sale held at the fairgrounds last week-end was a big success! Kathy Elliott and Maureen Zacher-Bockius set prices and visited with many people as they stopped by. Jerry Ledtke entertained us with some sweet sounding acoustic guitar music as we enjoyed the sunny day together and waited for more customers to stop in. If you didn’t stop by, try to attend the next sale, we have treasures and books for all ages. Watch this column for the next sale week-end announcement. The funds we raise at our sales go directly toward supporting your 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair!

Our new bleachers are being delivered to the fairgrounds. We expected them last week but between trucking transfers and two shipping agents that don’t communicate very well, things did not happen as planned. Hopefully as you read this article we have taken delivery of the new bleachers.

The Wahkiakum County Fair Board will have a booth at Bald Eagle Day to sell fair passes and firewood raffle tickets. If you had trouble finding passes last year, just stop by the booth and we will have them available for you to purchase.

There is a new rule in the fair book that professional exhibitors will need to take a look at. You will be considered a professional exhibitor if you derive 25 percent or more of your income from the work you are exhibiting at our fair.

Sunny weather brought out the gardening crew and they completed the flower bed in front of the T-building over the weekend. A few trees were moved, rose bushes planted and a windmill installed into the new flower bed for decoration. The windmill was donated to the fairgrounds by Mark Crary, the contractor that built the new stage last summer and looks very nice in the landscaping located by our T-building. Thank you, Mark, Georgie, Barb, Ed and MacKenzie!

Out in the Fairgrounds Park a lot of work is underway as we get the fairgrounds ready for the Dollars for Scholars event coming up on June 2. The parking areas were getting pretty bumpy and pot holes were appearing because of the amount of rain we had lately and the work we were doing in the park. John Gustafson and his bobcat and Bill Chamberlain with his backhoe spent many hours leveling the graveled areas and making the ground nice and smooth for the many beautiful cars and trucks that participate in this event. Thanks, Bill and John for donating time and equipment to get this project done!

If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371 or you can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Advisory Board meeting will be on May 9, at 7 p.m. at the River Street Building meeting room in Cathlamet.
