Presentation on effects of coal trains April 3
Landowners and Citizens for a Safe Community will host an informational meeting on April 3 at the Cowlitz PUD Auditorium, 961 12th Avenue in Longview. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; meeting starts at 7 p.m.
A Powerpoint presentation regarding the effects of coal trains will be shown. Speakers will include the Rev. Kathleen Patton of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. There will be time for questions and discussion.
Elder Options offers CPR class
Elder Options is offering a CPR class on April 26, noon – 4 p.m. covering the new American Heart Association Basic Life Support for healthcare providers. The class also covers adult, child/infant CPR with automatic external defibrillation, one and two person rescue, and adult, child/infant choking.
Upon completing the class, students will receive a two-year certification ID card. Class size is limited so call to reserve a seat, (360) 636-1000 or (800) 608-2388. Elder Options is located at 872 15th Avenue, Longview, across the street from PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center.
A Night of Blues II lineup announced
The River City Playhouse in Ilwaco will “Jump, Jive and Wail” on April 14, as Peninsula Players hosts the second annual fund raiser, A Night of Blues II, with local band North Coast Blues and Friends.
Guest performers for this event include singer/songwriter Lucy Hammond, vocalist Maggie Kitson, harmonica player Patrick “P.L.” Lines, guitarists John Arevalo and Richard Thomasian and many more.
Admission is $15 per person and attendees are asked to bring a canned food item for the local food bank. The River City Playhouse is at 127 Lake Street S.E. in Ilwaco.

Get a start on vegetables with Master Gardeners
On April 12 at 6 p.m. in Longview, Cowlitz County Master Gardeners will assist participants in starting vegetable plants.
Participants will pre-select their seeds for 18 starts prior to the workshop. Following a short presentation at the workshop, participants will plant the seeds in a mini greenhouse that they will take home. Attendees will receive a 10"X20" tray with greenhouse dome, 18 4" pots, seed starting mix and seeds. The workshop cost is $20. The workshop is sponsored by Washington State University Extension Master Gardeners. All participants must pre-register by April 6 by contacting Gary Fredricks at 577-3014 Ext 3 or at garyf@wsu.edu.
Cispus trip planned for May 5-7
All 8th graders will be offered a trip to Cispus Learning Center on May 5-7 this year, aimed at preparing them for their transition to high school life. Registration packets will go out in April after Spring Break and will be due on April 16, two weeks before the event. Food and lodging need to be ordered so preregistration is required.
Youth Mobilization Campaign is a collaborative effort between the Wahkiakum County Health & Human Services, Wahkiakum School District and Wahkiakum Community Network. Many youth serving agencies in Wahkiakum county provide support and/or participate. Cost of this program is covered through a grant and matched funds from the above mentioned agencies. There is no charge to students attending. Sleeping bags can be obtained on loan.
This year there will also be a parenting track for the parent chaperones which will include support by getting to know better school staff, others parents, and their children’s friends; information critical to raising newly mobile teens; insights to new demands of this developmental stage of parenting; increased positive connection to your youth because of this event and a chance to experience the challenge course. A meeting to answer questions for parents will be offered at the J.A. Wendt Elementary School Library on April 12 from 6-6:30 p.m.
