Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Gale Allen Stephens, 47, of Puget Island, passed away on March 19 at home.
He was born to Gale and Elizabeth (Short) Stephens in Redmond, Ore., on November 30, 1964. Gale was raised in Scappoose, Ore. During that time, as part of the Class of 1983, he was a state wrestling champion. He enjoyed his work as a farrier, taking care of challenging cases with horses which could have had a poor outcome if not for his expertise. He was well respected in his work as a Certified Farrier. He enjoyed the year he travelled the rodeo circuit with his beloved horse of 27 years, Stomper.
In 2005, he married his wife, Katie Ostervold, and they enjoyed the outdoors together biking and kayaking. He loved team roping and shooting, as well.
In addition to Katie he is survived by his daughter, Montana Stephens at home; his mother-in-law, Jacquelyn Ostervold, of Puget Island; four half siblings, Eli, Lisa Jo, Davey and Tommy. A half brother, Billie, preceded him in death. Gale also leaves behind a large extended family.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Cathlamet at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 25. Memorial donations in Gale's name may be made to ECAN (Esophageal Cancer Action Network), P.O. Box 243, Stevenson, MD 21153.
