What's Happening at the Fair?

It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We had a big volunteer crew cleaning up the branches and cutting up firewood last week-end. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the fairgrounds and moved the bigger trees around so they were easier to cut up. Thank-you to Chuck Gaines, Stuart Bosch, Ed, Barb, Georgie, Makenzie, Bill Chamberlain and Dan Cothren for all your hard work!

The Wahkiakum County Fair will be holding a firewood raffle again this year. We will be selling tickets at the fair office and all the events in our area. The firewood will be a mix of wood types. Maple, alder and hemlock will be cut and split into a cord of wood and stacked in a dry place until it is raffled off. The wood will keep your home nice and warm next winter if you are the lucky winner of this raffle. If you would like to purchase raffle tickets give me a call. The winning firewood raffle ticket will be drawn during our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair.

Anderson Shake and Shingle Inc. donated a big load of cedar shavings to the Fairgrounds last week. Each year we use their cedar shavings for animal bedding during fair, which helps us save quite a few dollars in bedding costs. The cedar looks and smells great in our flower beds also. Thank you, Anderson Shake and Shingle for delivering and donating your cedar shavings to the Fairgrounds!

Last year, when it was time to close the Fair account that pays the premium checks, I made phone calls to the exhibitors that hadn’t cashed their checks. I talked to most of these nice people and confirmed that they were donating their check to the fair by not cashing it. I had one exhibitor I couldn’t get a hold of and it was time to shut down the account. After talking to Robert Rich last week, I was very happy to find out he did not cash his check because he had intended to donate his premium check to support our Fair! Mr. Rich is also the Sheep Superintendent during our Fair. Thank you, Robert for volunteering your time and monetary support!

Only three weeks until it’s time to play Easter Bingo! Mark April 6 on your calendar as the night to be at the Wendt Multi-purpose room at 6 p.m. to play bingo with your friends and neighbors. At the event you can purchase $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win numerous prizes that will be drawn throughout the evening. Bingo winners take home delicious chickens or a ham for their bingo prize. This fund raiser is a Wahkiakum County Fair Advisory Board Event, all proceeds will support and maintain your 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair.
