Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we get some rain it will be nice to see it work again!
We are working toward getting the book and rummage sale open again in the T-building. The book sale is almost as good as a library because we have hundreds of books. Maybe I feel this way because we just received a truck load of books from the Naselle Timberland Library over the weekend. These were delivered and unloaded by Jack and Renee Smith. We appreciate them giving us the opportunity to sell these books and make a few dollars to fund the needs of the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds. It was fun running the book and rummage sale last summer and we look forward to being the stopping place for bargain shoppers and friends again. Watch for our signs on the highway and be sure you stop by!
Only two days until the Valentine Diamond Dinner! You can support the 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair by purchasing tickets to the Valentine Diamond Dinner held at the Skamokawa Grange on February 11th. Tickets are still only $25 per dinner and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a diamond necklace! You can purchase more raffle tickets for $1 each during the dinner to increase your chances of taking this prize home. Evening entertainment will be provided by talented pianist Sheran Parker. She will fill the Skamokawa Grange Hall with musical melodies as you enjoy your delicious dinner. Purchase your dinner tickets at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific or call Becky at 795-3434 or 560-0371 for out of town purchases. Dinner includes a filet mignon steak, baked potato with all the fixings, multi-lettuce salad, green beans, a fresh baked roll, dessert, a glass of wine or beverage. All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raising events go directly toward supporting and maintaining your 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair.
If you would like to attend the Valentine Diamond Dinner but are a vegetarian we also serve portabella mushrooms cooked on the barbecue. At the dinner just let your waitress know you would like the mushrooms instead of the filet mignon steak and you will be served a wonderful vegetarian dinner.
The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 795-3480 or 560-0371 and leave a message.
The Wahkiakum County Fair Board members are Bill Chamberlain, Jim Moten, Joe Blalock, Phil Vik, Rick Damitio, Shawn Merz, Neil Beerbower, Janet Bryan, Susan Rawls, Maureen Zacher-Bockius, Martha Backman and Deb Gribskov.
The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is March 14, 7 p.m., River Street Building Meeting Room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
