Mule boys win finale, head to district

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team travelled to Pe Ell last Thursday night and capped off the regular season with a 75-51 victory over the Trojans.

For the second time this season, the Mules faced the Trojans without leading scorer Wyatt Parker. After a fairly slow start, the Mules kicked it into high gear and torched the Trojans for 51 second-half points.

Lars Blix led the Mules with 22 points on 7/18 shooting and pulled in eight rebounds. Brett Chaput had his best offensive night of the season as he posted 16 points on 8/13 from the field. Chaput marked a double-double as he also grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the team.

Shane Souvenir netted double figures in his first extensive playing time at the varsity level as he added 13 points, nailing eight of 10 tries from the free throw line. John Chambers was the fourth Mule to reach double figures, totaling 11 points to go with seven assists and four steals.

The Mules finished the regular season with a 15-5 record and enter districts as the #3 seed. The Mules opened district play last night (Wednesday) in Centralia against Willapa Valley, the #6 seed from the Pacific League after Valley nipped Pe Ell 50-46 in a play-in game Tuesday night.

The Mule junior varsity squad dropped a tough one at Pe Ell as they took a nine-point lead into the final frame, being outscored 23-13 in the fourth to lose 62-61 to the Trojans.

It was a three man attack for the Mules, with Seth Doumit, Travis Wegdahl and Austin Good accounting for 55 of the team’s 61 points, netting 22, 19, and 14 respectively. Mitchell Dault added four and Zach Calvert picked up the other two. Good also grabbed nine rebounds for the Mules.
