What's Happening at the Fair?

This year has been a very busy year with a long list of projects completed by a wonderful crew of volunteers and employees! I look forward to the new projects planned for completion in 2012 and wish everyone in our community a “Happy New Year!”

If you would like to help plan the 2012 Fair, now is a good time to become a Fair Board member, pick up an application at the Wahkiakum County Commissioners office. You can also go online to http://www.co.wahkiakum.wa.us then go to the bottom of the first page and under the heading County Advisories you will see Fair Board Applications, click on this and print one out. As Commissioner Blair Brady said in his Eagle advertisement: “The Wahkiakum County Fair needs you! Applications are now being accepted for the newly revised to be Fun Fair Board. The board meets monthly, meetings last up to one and a half hours. Your interest and expertise are needed!” If you’ve ever had ideas for our Fair and would like to see them happen, turn in an application before January 10. If you are new to our community, don’t hesitate to fill out an application, you will make lots of new friends and we need your new ideas too!

Attention all horse owners that train and ride their horses at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds Arena. On January 1st I will be putting a new lock on the horse gate. If you would like to use the arena in 2012 it's time to purchase a new key, the cost is a bargain at $50 a year. Call Becky at 360-560-0371, leave your name, phone number, message and we can meet at the fairgrounds and complete the paperwork.

On February 11 you can spend a fine evening with your loved one at the fabulous “Valentine Diamond Dinner” held at the Skamokawa Grange. Our dinner menu is bacon wrapped filet mignon, baked potato with all the fixings, salad, rolls, dessert and a glass of wine or other beverage. Local musicians will perform an after dinner show to complete this special evening event. Cost is only $25 per dinner ticket and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a diamond necklace! I have purchased the necklace for this event and it is beautiful! You can purchase more raffle tickets for the diamond necklace at $1 each during the dinner, these tickets can only be bought exclusively by our dinner guests. Dinner tickets are available to purchase at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific or call Becky at 795-3434/560-0371 to get your tickets. All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raising events will go directly toward supporting and maintaining your 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The “2012 Fair Theme Contest” is going to end February 28! If you would like to enter the “2012 Fair Theme Contest” please call 795-3480 or send your name, phone number and theme idea to E-mail: wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net or mail to Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647. The Fair Board will select the most creative theme and award two Fair T-shirts and two Fair passes to the contest winner. (Last years’ theme was “Country Pride County Wide.”) Please submit your theme ideas today.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 795-3434 or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is January 11, 7 p.m., River Street Building Meeting Room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
