Cathlamet resident, Carl J. Backman, 65, passed away November 18, 2011 at St. John Medical Center. He was born July 28, 1946, in Longview, to Sigurd and Gunborg (Anderson) Backman. Carl grew up in Longview and graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1964. He married Lorna Sturm in 1966; she survives him at home.
In 1978 Carl and Lorna moved to Puyallup and nine years ago they moved to Cathlamet. He worked for Weyerhaeuser in research and development as a biologist for 38 years; retiring in 2002.
Carl loved his family. He was a thinker and had an analytical, reserved nature. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Lorna and loved fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife, Lorna; he is survived by his sons, Brian Backman (Carla) of Graham, and Kurt Backman (Leah) of Everett; his grandsons, Connor and Colin Backman; a sister, Ingrid Martin (Tom) of Kelso; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service was held November 23 at Dowling Funeral Home. A private graveside committal will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Carl Backman’s name to Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Box 142, Cathlamet, WA 98612.
