The 9-0 Naselle Comets, ranked third in the Associated Press Class 2B football poll, host the 4-3 Wahkiakum Mules Saturday, 7 p.m., in the opening game of post-season playoff action.
The Comets wrapped up an unblemished regular season with a 48-12 win over Ocosta last Thursday. The Mules had a bye.
The Comets base their game on having a big line that has controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. Quarterback Dustin Eaton can throw the ball, and running back Robert Eaton, 5-11 and 190 lbs., has been a handful for opposing defenders.
The Mules are a smaller team that has relied on the running of Wyatt Parker, 6-2 and 175 lbs., and Kohl Bergseng, 6-0 and 200 lbs. Quarterback Lars Blix, 6-1 and 190 lbs., is an effective runner and passer.
Mule Coach Eric Hansen is looking forward to the game.
"Offensively we need to maintain possession of the ball and keep the chains moving," he said Tuesday. "A balanced approach would be best but we will have to take what the defense gives us.
"Defensively we will need to contain Dusty Eaton and make sure we tackle Robert Eaton, who is a load. They are big up front so we will need to get off blocks and swarm to the football.
"Ultimately we need to block and tackle better than them."
