Two good men step up for council

To The Eagle:

Citizens of Cathlamet should count themselves lucky: Two good men are seeking votes to fill seats on our Town Council. I am writing to endorse both of these individuals, based on their long records of laudable public service.

Steve McNicholas, running as an incumbent in Position No. 1, works in the community’s interest in ways almost too numerous to list. He drives the trolley on market days and organizes volunteers to sweep streets, clean parks and help our elderly neighbors with simple home improvement. He supports our library, donates time to the historical society and works with county health officials to help address the needs of families facing tough times. Steve is also a strong advocate for clean, transparent government – something the Town must achieve in the wake of this year’s exhaustive state audit. He brings grace and good humor to whatever task is at hand.

Dick Swart, running as a write-in in Position No. 3, is a man of vision and determination. As my predecessor, he championed Cathlamet’s waste-water treatment plant project, recognizing that the long term gains far outweigh the considerable cost. He also oversaw key road and parking projects from Broadway to Una Streets, and began the arduous process of professionalizing EMS accounting. Dick’s political skills, experience and perspective will strengthen the next Town Council as we undertake initiatives launched under his leadership.

Our democracy is strengthened when elected seats are contested. Please join me in support of two fine individuals who will work unstintingly in the Town’s interest.

George Wehrfritz

Mayor,

Town of Cathlamet
