Mules sweep Vikes, visit Napavine

The Wahkiakum 8-3 Mule volleyball team swept Mossyrock 3-0 last Thursday and visited Napavine on Tuesday.

The Mules defeated Napavine 26-24, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15.

Coach Jeff Rooklidge said many players turned in outstanding performances.

"Tori Wegdahl was awesome; she had 18 kills, 11 digs and seven service points," he said. "Setter Brieanna Olsen was a standout; she made 39 assists, served 15 of 17 and had eight service points."

Baylee Olsen added nine kills and 10 service points, and Ashley Silva served 11/13, with eight service points.

"Libero Haylee Budd had one of her best matches on defense with 17 digs," Rooklidge said, "and she made a couple outstanding kills from the backline and served 16/17, with nine service points.

"Maya Stanley gave the team a lift with some diving saves from the floor."

The Mules swept Mossyrock 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 last Thursday.

"Wegdahl had another great match with nine kills and 17 service points," Rooklidge said. "She was in a good rhythm with her serve going 22/24 with 17 service points. She took Mossyrock out of their offense with tough serving.

"Baylee Olsen was dominant in the middle with eight kills and no hitting errors. She is emerging as one of our top hitters with her great jumping ability and quick arm swing.

"Brieanna Olsen had her best match of the year in terms of dispensing the ball to all of our hitters and keeping Mossyrock off balance. She had 26 assists. She also had eight digs and did a nice job on the defensive end of her game.

"Blaine Land led us in digs with nine and added eight kills and six service points. Blaine was really active playing tough defense and had some great digs that helped our offense.

"Haylee led the team in digs with 10 and made a couple of nice diving saves to lead our defense. Her passing on serve receive was solid with 12/18 passes being perfect passes on the net.

"Maya and Ashley were solid on defense with Maya making some nice passes and Ashley picking up a couple of nice blocks and a kill.

"Madison LaBerge had her most productive offensive match of the year hitting six kills and only one error. She and setter Brieanna Olsen had a good rhythm and timing tonight helping improve the team's right side attack."

The Mules entertain Morton/White Pass tonight (Thursday). They go to Pe Ell on Tuesday and entertain Toutle Lake on Wednesday in their regular season finale. Teams will start district tournament competition October 29.
