Mules beat Pe Ell 34-7 for homecoming.
The Wahkiakum Mules rolled over the Pe Ell Trojans for a 34-7 win in the Mule homecoming game last Friday.
The Mules did what they wanted to do on offense, and the defense kept the visitors under control.
Wyatt Parker scored the first of his two touchdowns for the night at 7:29 of the first quarter by catching a pass from Lars Blix, breaking a tackle and streaking to the endzone for a 76-yard scoring play. Blix kicked the conversion; he made four of five for the night.
Tight end Eli McElroy set up the next score on a pass play. A Trojan defender apparently had the interception, but McElroy reached over the defender's head and ripped the ball out of his hands as they went to the ground for a Mule completion. Fullback Kohl Bergseng completed the drive by breaking free up the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run at 7:02 of the second quarter.
The Mules closed out the first half with Blix hitting an uncovered Parker on a play action pass for a 20-yard scoring play that put the Mules up 21-0 at halftime.
The Mules controlled the ball in the third quarter, which ended with them perched on the Trojan five-yard line. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Blix passed to Bergseng who ran in for the score.
The Mule varsity ran one more offensive series. Steven Doumit followed a wall of blockers into the endzone on a sweep for an eight-yard touchdown.
The Trojans' Jared Potter scored against the Mule junior varsity defense on a 57 yard run to close the scoring.
The Mules had 11 first downs, 185 rushing on 39 carries and 253 yards on nine pass completions. They had seven penalties for 50 yards and lost one of two fumbles.
The Trojans gained 181 yards rushing on 38 carries and completed one pass for four yards. They had five penalties for 40 yards.
Bergseng gained 106 yards on 13 carries, caught one pass for five yards, and had two touchdowns. Parker gained 67 yards on nine runs, caught five passes for 183 yards, and scored two touchdowns. Doumit gained 31 yards on eight runs and had one touchdown. Blix completed eight of 17 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Seth Doumit completed one pass for 22 yards.
The 2-2 Mules hit the road this week to take on the 2-2 Mossyrock Vikings. With Adna, Napavine and Morton/White Pass fighting for the league title, Wahkiakum, Mossyrock and Toutle Lake will be battling for the league's final playoff berths.
