Pirates edge Mules; Vikings fall Tuesday

The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team lost a hard match with Adna last Thursday and won on the road at Mossyrock on Tuesday.

The visiting Adna Pirates topped the Mules 3-1 on September 15 by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23.

Adna is the defending 2010 district champion from last year; the Pirates knocked off Toutle Lake in the championship.

"Adna started strong, and we played tentative volleyball in the first two sets," said Mule Coach Jeff Rooklidge. "In the third and fourth sets, we turned it up a notch and played much better.

"We really strugg led with our serving game, missing 18 serves on the night."

Blaine Land led the team in kills with 19. Tori Wegdahl added nine kills and some great passing and defense, Rooklidge said. Baylee Olsen added six kills and a couple of blocks; Brieanna Olsen had four kills and 21 assists.

"Haylee Budd had a great night passing in our serve receive and led us in serving," Rooklidge said.

The Mules swept the Mossyrock Vikings 3-0 Tuesday at Mossyrock. They won 25-18, 25-11, 25-7.

Wegdahl made 10 kills and served 13 service points. Land added eight kills and nine service points; Baylee Olsen had five kills and four blocks, and Brieanna Olsen made 25 assists.

The Mules entertain the Napavine Tigers tonight (Thursday). On Saturday, they travel to Raymond for a tournament, and on Tuesday, they head to White Pass. They entertain the Pe Ell Trojans on September 29.
