What's Happening at the Fair? - September 15, 2011

As Fair Manager I have the honor of giving out a Manager's Award. This year I gave the award to two volunteer superintendents who spent many weeks building, cleaning, painting, decorating and preparing paperwork before our Fair started. These two volunteers worked many long days and through it all smiled and enjoyed every minute! They made their Rabbit, Cavy and Poultry building a special place for exhibitors to bring and show their animals. The 2011 Manager's Award was given to Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal. Congratulations and thank you for all you do to make our Fair a success!

Want to cover your garden with mulch for the winter? We have lots of certified weed and seed free straw in our cow barn. Call the fair office at 795-3480, please say your name and phone number slowly. I will call you back with a time we can meet and you can take home a truck full of this straw. There is no charge for the straw but donations are gladly accepted. The straw is very dry and fluffy, please bring a tarp to cover your load, so it doesn’t blow out on the way home.

We are lucky to have community organizations that support our Fair. Skamokawa Grange members generously donated the use of their beautiful grange building for our Fair dance. The 58 teenagers attending the dance had a great time dancing and visiting with their friends. We appreciate their continued support of our Fair Board activities. Thank-you Skamokawa Grangers!

Some of you may have noticed the vegetable garden behind the T-building during Fair. The garden is now producing squash and cucumbers! I think extending this garden would be a good project for next spring.

As summer draws to an end, why not take the family camping one more time? You don’t even need to leave the county. The fairgrounds park is a beautiful small private affordable hide-a-way. Call the fair office to make your reservation.

There are still a few exhibits left at the Fairgrounds, please call the Fair office and we can arrange a time to get your exhibits picked up.

The Fair Board will be raising funds for improvements needed before our next Fair. I hope you will support our fund raising events now and in 2012. If you would like to be involved in helping the Fair Board plan our 104th Wahkiakum County Fair, please come to our next Fair Board meeting. New volunteers and ideas are always welcome.

The Fair office is open for limited hours in September. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Manager Becky Ledtke at 360-560-0371, or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is October 12, 7 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
