Ora R. Eaton

Lifelong Puget Island resident Ora Roberta Eaton, 94, passed away August 25, 2011 in Cathlamet. She was born April 24, 1917 in Clatskanie, Ore. to George and Rosa (Hicks) Canham. She moved to Puget Island in 1930 and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1934. On August 27, 1936 she married Cecil Eaton on Puget Island; he preceded her in death in 1993.

Ora was a member of Cathlamet Assembly of God Church since 1950 and served as church treasurer for 32 years, and was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. She volunteered for The Red Cross for many years and the HOST program at J.A. Wendt Elementary School for five years.

She was a telephone operator for Puget Island Telephone Company in 1934 until 1940, worked for Wahkiakum County as Deputy Treasurer for 11 years and spent 14 years as the accountant in the County Engineer’s Office; retiring in 1980. Ora and Cecil farmed on Puget Island from 1946 until 1996. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, baking and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Frank of Cathlamet; her sons, Robert Eaton (Rosalie) of Rosburg and Danny Eaton (Terri) of Puget Island; a foster son, Bill Mahitka (Linda) of Skamokawa; six grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Cecil, she was preceded by her three brothers, Albert, William and Ben Canham; three sisters, Emma Christie, Irma Morgan and Carol Kincaid and a granddaughter in 1970.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday at River of Life Assembly of God with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery, returning to the Church for Fellowship. Memorial contributions may be made in Ora Eaton’s name to River of Life Assembly of God Church, Boys & Girls Camp, 45 Main St., Cathlamet, WA 98612.
