What's Happening at the Fair? - August 11, 2011

We are going into high gear this week as a lot of event details are finalized. Buildings will be cleaned and decorated as we get ready for the thousands of entries that we hope to receive from the community. This community of family and friends make our fair the special meeting place it is each year. I encourage everyone to bring their crafts, photos, flowers, baked goods, garden vegetables, canned goods, fresh berries, quilts, sewn items, oil paintings and exhibit them at the Fair. If you have a special talent, like knitting, basket weaving, drawing, painting, crafting items, etc. and would like to demonstrate to others, we have demonstration tables set up in the T-building for that purpose. Call Becky at 795-3480 to be added to the schedule.

It’s time to remind everyone which days to bring their still life and animal exhibits to the Fair.

On August 15, 3-9 p.m. bring in 4-H, FFA, open youth, open adult, club and organization exhibits of: art, photography, collections, food preservation, sewing, needlecraft, quilts, crafts, hobbies, wine & beer. Educational displays must be set up by 9 p.m. Posters for open youth and adults can be turned in from 3-9 p.m.

On August 16, 3-9 p.m. bring in 4-H, FFA, open youth, open adult, club and organization exhibits of: baked goods, candies, cake decorations, floral, garden and forage crops.

On August 17 3-4 p.m. enter all market sale animals, 4-10 p.m. enter all 4-H, FFA, and open class animals.

On August 20 there will be a cat show at 9 a.m. and a dog show at 10 a.m. Be sure to bring your current rabies vaccination certificate with you, this must be checked before your animal can be judged.

Have you been wondering who is going to be serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner in the big food booth during Fair? Janet Bryan and the River of Life Women’s Group have put together a nice menu and are ready to start cooking!

Entertainment stage? Yes! On August 8, we had a concrete foundation, a floor, three walls up and the dressing rooms were being built. By the time you read this column, I am hoping the stage will be almost done. I hear there may be a Wahkiakum Acoustic Guitar Society (WAGS) get together as soon as the stage is done! Jerry Ledtke seems to think we need a group to check it out before the Fair entertainment arrives. Sounds like a good idea to me too!

Please note that the horse riding arena will be closed August 15-20 to the public, as we prepare the fairgrounds for the Fair.

The pig, sheep and goat barn has been worked on by lots of volunteers in the last two months. 4-H volunteers Abby Buennagel, Kyle Stump and Lisa Frink took their turn painting animal pens last week. We appreciate the hours they worked painting and the fine job they did.

We have an up to date Fair website! If you Google Wahkiakum County Fair, click on the first link and you will find our Fair poster and schedule. In the future, I will get pictures of the stage, the volunteers and the Fair onto the website. Right now I am almost too busy to write this column!

The 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair Princesses, Ashley Hedges and Akaysha Stonebreaker, are selling raffle tickets and Fair passes. The passes are $6 and admit you to the Fair all three days. The raffle tickets are $1, grand prize is a night's stay at the Great Wolf Lodge. Buy these passes and tickets from your favorite princess to help her receive a college scholarship and/or become our 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen!

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 360-560-0371 or call the Fairgrounds Office at 360-795-3480.
