Comprehensive plan committee to meet

The Cowlitz County Comprehensive Plan Update steering committee will hold a meeting at the Cowlitz County Historical Museum conference room, 405 Allen Street in Kelso on August 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend. For more information contact Barb Kincaid at 577-3041.

Youth football sign ups begin

Any youth entering the 4th, 5th or 6th grade interested in playing youth Football can get a sign up form at the Bank of the Pacific or by calling Kevin Patching at 360-431-8486.

A parent meeting and practice will be held August 29 at 6 p.m. at the high school football field. All participants need a current physical, and a concussion form. Cost is $80.

Poetry contest offers $1,000 grand prize

A $1,000 grand prize is being offered to the last poet standing in a free contest sponsored by the Celestial Arts Society. There are 50 prizes in all totaling $5,000.

Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by the contest director, Dr. James Cameron.

Entries must be received by August 21 and may be submitted by mail to Free Poetry Contest, 221 N. Central Ave. #228, Medford, OR, 97501 or entered online at http://www.freecontest.com.

Those sending entries should include their name and address on the same page as the poem. A winners list will be sent to all entrants.

Picnic and movie in the park tomorrow

Wahkiakum Community Garden and WSU Wahkiakum County Extension will hold their first Picnic and Movie in the Park tomorrow.

The group will show Gnomeo and Juliet, rated G, at the Cathlamet City Park at sundown.

There will be an opening short film by 4-H Youth Mobilization, sponsored by Wahkiakum Community Network.

The community garden will also be having an open house starting at 7 p.m. for those who are interested in the opportunity.

Popcorn and refreshments will be provided; other snacks will also be for sale by 4-H. For more information, contact Melissa Wong at 795-6207.

Red Cross blood drive set for August 29

The American Red Cross Blood Services is urging donors to donate before the start of the new school season. Any healthy person aged 18 or older and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible. Sixteen to 17 year olds may donate with a signed parental consent. Valid identification is required for all blood donations.

All eligible donors are asked to schedule an appointment to donate blood at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3 Fern Hill Road in Cathlamet on August 29 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Call Patti Phillips at 795-8821 or schedule online at http://www.redcrossblood.org, code wahkiakum.
