Steam engine society headed to Cathlamet

Nest week, Cathlamet's Elochoman Slough Marina will be filled with the chugging sounds of steam engines.

The Northwest Steam Society will hold its Annual Steam Meeting August 12-14 at the marina, drawing steam engine enthusiasts and their machines from all over the Pacific Northwest.

The annual meeting, held each August at a different location, attracts over 30 steam launches as well as automobiles, models, and stationary equipment, according to the society's website. It includes a Friday evening social and a banquet on Saturday evening. Viewing of equipment is open to the general public.

The society will have the entire use of the marina for the meet. There will be exhibits, tables to display and/or swapping of steam items. Plans include the display and operation of stationary steam equipment and steam automobiles.

One reason the society decided to hold the meet at Cathlamet is access to nearby sloughs and sheltered channels off the Columbia where steamboats may travel.
