What's Happening at the Fair?

Knife River Company brought the last load of concrete on Friday that was needed to finish the two horse barn walkways! This second pour was just as big as the previous pour, but we were experienced concrete workers now, so it seemed to go a little faster. Bill Chamberlain drove his backhoe to the cement truck, the bucket was filled with concrete, he drove into the barn, dumped the concrete, then the crew pushed it into place. Thanks to our cement project crew: Ed Stevens, Mark Cothren, Jerry and Valle Ledtke, Mike Antijunti, Cody Vik, Dave and Makayla Matthews, Bill Chamberlain and Richie, this 2011 Horse Barn project is done. Thanks also to Knife River Concrete Company for working up a quote that was within our budget so we could complete this project.

There are still two more horse barn walkways that we would like to pour cement onto in the future. We will need to plan some fund raising events to cover the costs and I hope you will support our efforts as we make our fairgrounds easier for everyone to access and enjoy. Funds to make this Fairgrounds improvement possible were donated by Valerie Antijunti, 4-H Council and a grant.

Be sure to stop by Vista Park in Skamokawa this weekend! Locals and visitors have enjoyed 30 years of camping and picnicking at this beautiful campground. The 2011 Fair Royalty were invited to help make this event special. The 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair princesses, Ashley Hedges and Akaysha Stonebreaker, will be selling fair passes and also raffle tickets for a nights stay at the Great Wolf Lodge. Please support the efforts of both girls, as they work toward raising funds for our Fair and also securing a Scholarship to further their education when they graduate from High School.

At the Vista Park 30 year celebration, I will have Fair books available for you to take home and will be selling raffle tickets for the two cords of firewood from the alder trees that were cut up in May. The cords are raffled separately, you can purchase tickets for cord one and cord two. This raffle is a Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raiser. All proceeds will be used for projects on the Fairgrounds or for maintenance and the operation of the 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair.

Only three more weeks until Fair! Want to be a vendor at the Wahkiakum County Fair? It’s time to give me a call and secure your space! Please leave a message on the recorder.

The exhibitor tags have arrived, you can pick them up at the fair office Monday to Friday noon to 4 p.m. If you need to pick them up later in the evening, call and we can plan a time to meet.

I need a T-building Superintendent for Open Class Adult Hobbies & Collections. This is a fun department to manage. If you have some time on your hands, would like to be involved in the fair, this is the perfect opportunity. For all the details call the numbers listed below. Be sure to leave a message, I am just outside working and will call as soon as I am back in the office.

We are no longer just planning to build an entertainment stage, it is being constructed as you read this article! Contractor Mark Crary has been busy setting concrete forms and bringing in lumber. With Fair only three weeks away we hope to have a stage for the great entertainment we have scheduled! Seems there is always some project that is being built just days before the Fair each year!

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 360-560-0371 or you can call the Fairgrounds Office at 360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting will start at 5 p.m. on July 27, in the T-building at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
