Volleyball camp set for next week

Wahkiakum High School will sponsor a volleyball camp for players entering grades 6-12 on July 20-21. The camp will be led by former collegiate player and Cathlamet resident Kayli Anderson.

Anderson, the current Assistant Volleyball Coach at Lower Columbia College, played at Lower Columbia during the 2004 and 2005 seasons earning MVP honors for the NWACC Western Division both years. After graduating from LCC she continued her volleyball career at Warner Pacific College in Portland where she was named conference Setter of the Week twice during her senior season.

The camp will include six hours of instruction with a focus on helping players improve their skills in preparation for the upcoming season. The camp will run on July 20 and July 21 with sessions going from 9:30-11 a.m. and noon-1:30 p.m.

Raffle tickets on sale at farmers market

Bernadette Goodroe and Pam Emery will be at the Two Islands Farmers Market on Puget Island this Friday to sell tickets for a raffle in benefit of Redmen Hall.

The prize is a dinner for six at the Inn at Crippen Creek Farm prepared by Don and Kitty Speranza at a time of the winner's choosing.

Tickets are $5. The market is open from 3-6:30 p.m.

Dogs to run on Puget Island this weekend

Misty Rivers Plantation on Puget Island will play host to all breed lure coursing trials this weekend.

The three day event, sponsored by the Afghan Hound Club of Greater Portland and the Willamette Basenji Club is now open to all breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Breeds other than sighthounds will compete for a coursing aptitude award.

The trials will run from 9 a.m. to mid afternoon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 117 Cross Dike Road. Parking, refreshments and restrooms will be available.

Gregory memorial tomorrow

The Navy Honor Guard will be performing military honors, including gun volleys, for Mike Gregory’s memorial service on the grounds of J.A. Wendt Elementary School tomorrow (Friday) at 1 p.m.

Museum showcases Guardian of Altoona

The Wahkiakum Historical Museum will be open following the Bald Eagle Parade on Saturday to showcase their new exhibit, the Guardian of Altoona.

On the museum grounds, the Historical Society will offer rides on the mini train, root beer floats and the chance to meet Irish wolfhounds.

The museum is located behind the courthouse, next to the PUD garage building in Cathlamet. No admission will be charged during the Bald Eagle Festival.

Big band brings Finnish swing

The United Finnish Kaleva Brothers & Sisters Lodge No. 2 of Astoria and the Finnish American Folk Festival of Naselle will host the Kauhava Big Band from Finland on July 22 at 7 p.m.

Kauhava Big Band was formed in 1986 by musicians from all regions of Finland. The band is comprised of five saxophonists, four bassoonists, four trumpets, an accordionist, pianist, bassist and a drummer. Conductor is Jukka Lumme. Soloists are Seinäjoki tango finalist, Erkki Mustikkamäki and jazz soloist Helena Taijala.

They will present a themed concert "Kielon Jaahyvaiset" (Lily of the Valley - A War Pilot’s Story) at the Performing Arts Center, 1653 Jerome, Astoria. Immediately following the concert a no-host reception will be held at Fort George Brewery. Tickets can be purchased at the door, at FinnWare in Astoria and at Creative Flaire in Naselle or by sending a check made out to FAFF, to Anita Raistakka, 92 Bighill Rd., Naselle, WA 98638. The cost is $10/adult and $5/children.
