LCC bands, choirs present free concerts
Lower Columbia College's Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and choral groups will present free concerts over the next week.
The Lower Columbia College Symphonic Band will present its annual Young Artist Concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). Symphonic Band Director Kurt Harbaugh has chosen a varied program: some European and some American, some familiar pieces from the band's repertoire and some new ground. Featured soloist, baritone Larson Dick, a senior at Kelso High School, will sing "L' Ultima Canzone" by F. Paolo Tosti.
Jazz Night is June 14, with the LCC Jazz Band, directed by Kurt Harbaugh, hosting the Kelso High School Jazz Band, directed by Craig Gustafson. Mike Paul will play a flugelhorn solo on "Blue" by Bobby Shew, and Dennis Vargas will be featured pianist on "Send in the Clowns."
LCC's choral groups will present "That's Entertainment: A Musical Revue" on June 16. Director Gina Osborn has chosen a wide variety of favorites, many of them from Broadway musicals. With many soloists, the Columbia Community Choir, Do Wop Devils Jazz Choir, and Bella Voce Concert Choir will perform such favorites as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Someone to Watch over Me," "St. Louis Blues," "Misty," and "Chim Chim Cheree."
All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Wollenberg Auditorium, Rose Center for the Arts. More information about LCC concerts is online at http://lowercolumbia.edu/aande.
New signs give history of Butler Hansen garden
The Julia Butler Hansen House in Cathlamet now has new signs to describe the historical trees and bushes in its garden.
The Caroline Tester Rose, planted in 1907, was the official rose of the first Rose Festival. Trees planted by George Roberts in the 1800s are from Fort Vancouver's Cowlitz Farms. Roberts was married to James Birnie's sister Rose.
Butler Hansen developed the boxwood hedges with her husband Henry, to create rooms in the garden with many more trees and bushes added in the early 1950s.
There will be an open house for visitors to enjoy the garden, including the rhododendrons, in honor of Butler Hansen's birthday on June 13, 1-3 p.m.
