What's Happening at the Fair?

Last week the plans for the entertainment stage, that the Fair Board would like to have built, were given to Chuck Beyer who manages the Building and Planning for Wahkiakum County. He will redraw the plans so a contractor can look at his blueprints and build the stage at the Fairgrounds. Soon we will have a new entertainment stage!

We have been using cedar shavings in many landscaping projects on the Fairgrounds. The shavings smell good and are a red cedar color that looks really nice in our flower beds. We also like to use the shavings in the poultry and rabbit barn and some of the horse stalls during fair. Our cedar shavings bin was almost empty. I asked Scott Anderson if he could donate a truck load of shavings to the fairgrounds. We received our truck load of cedar shavings last week. Thank you Anderson Shake & Shingle Inc., for delivering and donating the cedar shavings to the fairgrounds, we will put them to good use!

Oh boy, do we have a big project to clean up! There were a few trees that were looking a bit dangerous to have people and cars parked under them in the Fairgrounds Park. I asked Commissioner Dan Cothren to take a look at them. He thought it would be a good idea to cut them down and so he felled those trees last week! The danger is over, but we have limbs and lots of firewood to cut up and stack. Dan will chain saw the trees into 16 inch lengths for firewood. We could use some help splitting the wood and moving brush to a burn pile. Stop by or give me a call, we definitely need some help with this project!

Want to be a vendor at the Wahkiakum County Fair? It’s time to give me a call and secure your space!

Neil Beerbower was taking care of some necessary tractor maintenance on Saturday, so Jean decided to open up the book and rummage sale for a few hours. Lots of people saw the signs out on the highway and stopped by to look through the donated treasures we have and the 100’s of good books. Thanks Jean, good idea! These sales help support the operation and maintenance of the Wahkiakum County Fair.

Another project was addressed this week. Some of you know how hard it was to open the T-building doors and sometimes they would get stuck shut. Jerry Ledtke stopped by with his wood working tools and fixed the doors. Thanks Jerry, these little fix- it projects are appreciated!

Circle June 4 on your calendar, you don’t want to miss the Derby Dollars for Scholars and Rods & Reels Rod Run event at the fairgrounds! Be sure to read the poster tacked up around town for details about this fun-filled day full of family events. It’s the place to be on June 4!

If you have experience in organizing a horse gaming event please give me a call. I will do the advertising, registration forms and prize gathering, and I have a list of participants from our last gaming series to send information to. We have the gaming equipment and the timers. I need experienced help to set up the six events in the arena and an announcer.

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371 or you can call the Fairgrounds Office at 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting will start at 7 p.m. on June 8, in the T-building at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
