Hazardous waste collection set June 4

Wahkiakum County's annual household hazardous waste collection day will be June 4.

The Cowlitz County Mobile Collection Unit will be at the Wahkiakum PUD parking lot on River Street, Cathlamet, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect hazardous wastes from homes.

People may bring pesticides, paint, thinners, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, pool and hobby chemicals, cleaning products and toxic, corrosive or flammable materials.

They may not bring material from businesses, farms, schools and churches, unlabeled products, empty paint cans, leaking containers, containers larger than five gallons or 50 lbs., explosives or ammunition, radioactive material, biological or infectious material, or hypodermic needles.

People should keep the products in their original containers and store them so they don't spill when transported. Don't bring children or pets, organizers say.

There is no charge; the event is financed through a grant from the state Department of Ecology.

During the year, hazardous wastes may be disposed at the Waste Control Transfer Station, 1150 3rd Avenue, Longview, Tuesday through Saturday 9:30-11:30 a.m.
