What's Happening at the Fair? - May 19, 2011

Early Saturday morning a group of seven volunteers arrived at the Fairgrounds to complete a painting project. They spent the day painting the inside of the horse barn stalls red and leveling the ground inside of the stalls. At noon the volunteers took a break and were served a gourmet lunch by Lois Wakefield. Lois brought enough food to feed all the volunteers working on the horse barn and everyone else volunteering on the various projects on the Fairgrounds that day. The barn is looking great thanks to Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijunti, Joni, Makenzie and Makayla Matthews, and Starsha and Shaleesha Rose. Special thanks to Lois Wakefield for working all day and sharing a fabulous lunch with the whole Fairgrounds volunteer crew!

Last weekend the Fairgrounds was the site of many hours of volunteer activity and not just at the horse barn. Fair Board President Neil Beerbower fixed the ice machine and worked on other various projects that needed some attention. Jean Beerbower was getting ready for the next book sale in June. Jerry Ledtke was busy loading compost into pickup trucks as local gardeners stopped by to receive a load or two. Bryan Ledtke and Azery Gribskov painted counters in the ice cream booth. Barbara Czarnecki and Georgie Billings were busy creating new landscaping areas to make the Fairgrounds alive with color using many different types of flowers. With a crew of volunteers this size a lot was accomplished! We have lots of projects to do to get ready for the 2011 Fair and we would welcome your help too, call or stop by!

Easter Bingo was fun last month, lots of bingo games, raffle prizes and good food! Thinking about food, we received over 70 cans of food at the bingo event to donate to the local food banks. Thank you to all who remembered to bring a can of food to donate, your thoughtfulness really helps people in our community!

Be sure to read the poster posted around town for details about this fun-filled day full of family events. It’s the place to be on June 4! If you have experience in organizing a horse gaming event please give me a call. I will do the advertising, registration forms, prize gathering and I have a list of participants from our last gaming series to send information out to. We have the gaming equipment and the timers. I need experienced help to set up the six events in the arena, an announcer and a person to record times. If interested in helping, please call and with your help we can get these events planned.

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371 or you can call the Fairgrounds Office at 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting will start at 7 p.m. on June 8, in the T-building at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
