What's Happening at the Fair? - April 21, 2011

The Fairgrounds were the site of the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Used Book and Rummage Sale last weekend!

We had lots of people stop by and purchase books and other good, useable items that were for sale. It was nice to visit with everyone that stopped by, seemed like a mini-fair get together. We plan on having used book sales and rummage sales at least once a month. Our community has donated items we still need to pick up for our next sale in May and we will also be receiving 20 boxes of good books to sell at this sale. Watch this column for the next sale date. All proceeds will maintain and operate the 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair!

This Friday is Easter Bingo! Fair board member Martha Backman has chosen an XBOX 360 with Kinect and a 4GB bundle for the Special Raffle Drawing prize this year at Easter Bingo. Tickets are only $1 for a chance to win this great prize. We will also have a multiple prize raffle drawing, tickets are only $1 for a chance to win these prizes too. Bring a can of food to donate to the local food bank and we will trade you a bingo card for it. When you win a bingo game you will receive a delicious ham or Foster Farms Chicken. Stop by the J.A Wendt multi-purpose room, April 22 at 6 p.m. for an evening of family fun playing bingo.

I ask in my column for volunteer help at the Fairgrounds almost every week. We had three hard working volunteers show up last week. They have many years of experience in landscaping. After looking around the Fairgrounds and a little consulting about the way we would like the grounds to look, they went to work. The rock enclosed flower and shrub areas around the barns and buildings are being cleaned up and replanted. The volunteers are using the plants that are already growing on the Fairgrounds. They are dividing the plants that are too big and moving them to new areas. If you have some plants that you need to divide and would like to donate your extra plants for use on the Fairgrounds, please give me a call. Thank you Ed Stevens, Georgie Billing and Barbara Clark for all the hard work you are doing to make our Fairgrounds look landscaped and beautiful!

Have a little time to volunteer? We have lots of projects to do to get ready for the 2011 Fair and we would welcome your help!

Very good news. We received the same amount of fair funding from the state as we received last year! Time to plan our 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair!

Once again I am asking our community for help. We need to keep future state fair funding in the budget, please e-mail Governor Chris Gregoire to let her know how important the Fair is to this community and to please keep the fair funding in the 2011-2013 budget. Go to http://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/default.asp to send a message to Governor Gregoire. Your messages are making a difference!

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371 or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting will be May 11, in the T-building ,at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend our meetings.
