Two arrested in DV incidents

Two men were arrested March 19 in connection with separate domestic violence incidents on Puget Island. They will be arraigned Monday in Wahkiakum County Superior Court on a variety of charges.

Shawn N. Gilbert, 27, faces four charges following an incident on that Saturday morning.

He is charged with residential burglary/domestic violence, assault in the third degree, escape in the third degree, and violation of a no contact order.

According to the charges, Deputy Sheriff Helen Coubra was sent to a Little Island residence at 8 a.m. at the request of the female tenant, who was away at work, to see if Gilbert was there, for he had been texting messages to her. Coubra reported seeing no signs of anyone at the residence, but she didn't enter.

At 9:24 a.m., she was again dispatched to the house and encountered the female occupant, who was too upset to speak. She then spotted Gilbert in the house and tried to place him under arrest. He resisted, and they struggled and went to the floor, Coubra said. Gilbert, who stands 6'1" tall and weighs about 240 lbs., was able to push Coubra aside and escape into nearby brush. Coubra sustained bumps and bruises and a sore back.

The victim said she had found Gilbert in the residence when she came home from work.

Other officers responded to the scene and later found Gilbert and placed him under arrest. Bail was set at $50,000.

Later that same day, officers were sent to a Puget Island residence where a man allegedly assaulted his ex-wife and her daughter.

Pedestrians reported the incident at 8:13 p.m., saying a screaming child had come down a driveway to ask them for help, and they called the sheriff's office.

Before officers arrived, the suspect left the scene.

When officers arrived, a female victim said the man, her ex-husband, had been drinking and came to the house. The man and woman eventually quarreled, officers reported, and the man grabbed her by the throat and began striking her. The daughter tried to intervene, officers said, and the man knocked the girl aside. The girl left to seek help, and the man also left in a pickup that was later identified as belonging to a Longview man. The female victim was taken by ambulance for treatment of injuries, which included a concussion and bumps and bruises.

Wahkiakum officers asked Longview officers to watch for the man, and Longview police were able to arrest him. He was identified as Steven D. Stingmaster, 55.

Stingmaster is charged with assault in the second degree/domestic violence; assault in the fourth degree/domestic violence, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock. Bail was set at $5,000.
