Community groups are getting together next Monday, 6 p.m., at Wendt Elementary School, Cathlamet, for a program on the prevention of youth suicide.
Local elected officials are supporting the program. Below is the proclamation approved by both the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners and the Town of Cathlamet Council. It has a lot to say. I hope the community will support this program.

Promote Education and Awareness for Youth Suicide Prevention
WHEREAS, suicide is one of the most disruptive and tragic events a family or community can experience; and
WHEREAS, surveys indicate children and adults educated on the dangers and effects of suicide are more likely to detect and possibly prevent such an act; and
WHEREAS, raising awareness in the community about the significance of mental health and the importance of promoting treatment and education can save lives; and
WHEREAS, parental influence, school climate, community education and involvement are known to be the most crucial factors in preventing suicide among youth; and
WHEREAS, heightened awareness and education will encourage the development of strategies and support programs to help prevent youth suicide;
NOW, THEREFORE, We, the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners and Cathlamet Town Council, do hereby recognize that youth suicide prevention efforts are crucial to deterring the tragic loss of human life and that March 28, 2011 is designated Youth Suicide Prevention Day – A Day to Focus on Youth Suicide Prevention Awareness in the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County.
