The Naselle Comette defense was too much for the Wahkiakum Lady Mules as Naselle won a 49-29 2B Girls District Tournament basketball team Tuesday in Rochester.
The Mules had a tough time advancing the ball down the court against the Comets full-court pressure and open looks from the field were few and far between.
The Mules mustered only 29 points on eight of 55 shooting from the field and 11 for 29 from the free throw line. The loss ends the Lady Mules' season.
The Comettes had a much better night, shooting 38 percent as they rolled to a convincing 49-29 win to advance in districts. They'll play Raymond tonight (Thursday), 8 p.m., in Castle Rock. The loser is done, and the winner plays again Saturday, 4 p.m., in Chehalis, with the winner of that game headed to the state tournament.
Comette Taylor Wasmundt led all scorers with 17 points. Also scoring for the Comettes were Carley Kitzman nine, Nicole Tarabochia seven, Haleigh See six. Makenzie Matthews five, Katie Green four and Victoria Corona one.
Brieanna Olsen led the Mules with 11 points while Haylee Budd chipped in with eight. Blaine Land added five, Shelby Felton three, and Marissa Washington two.
Pe Ell 52, Wahkiakum 36
The Mules opened district play with a 52-36 loss to the Pe Ell Trojans on February 9.
Pe Ell used control of the boards to jump ahead 12-5 after one quarter; they led 27-12 at halftime.
Olsen led the Mule scoring with 18 points. Land added seven, Helms six, Felton three and Budd two. Land had 15 rebounds and four steals.
The Mules finish the season with a 6-16 record.
