Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
To The Eagle:
Thank you new County Commissioners and Dirk Rhone for putting the kibosh on the old commission's approval of the Oregon Pipeline.
You quickly acted in the county's best interest. Re-evaluating the environmental and safety impacts of the proposed 41 mile natural gas pipeline that would cross Clatsop County is absolutely necessary. Whether the pipeline would be for exporting gas to China and other Asian countries or used for importing LNG, the consumer and the environment would be the loser of this venture. Since NorthernStar's Bradwood Landing project went bankrupt and withdrew its LNG exporting/importing enterprise, some people think that LNG in Oregon is over.
Please realize that Oregon LNG/Oregon Pipeline who are subsidiaries of Leucadia, a New York & Utah holding company, are still trying to get approval for their terminal/pipeline on the Skipanon Peninsula. The LNG proposal in Coos Bay, called Jordan Cove, is also trying to get a foothold.
Since November 2004, when the Port of Astoria let the first LNG prospector, Calpine, in the back door, a large part of Clatsop County citizenry became organized and continue to fight today to keep Oregon free of LNG. On February 9, 10 a.m. at the Judge Guy Boyington Bldg., 857 Commercial Street, Astoria, Clatsop county commissioners will set the scope of the review of the application by Oregon Pipeline/Oregon LNG to run a natural gas pipeline through our county.
Please join us and show the commission their constituents do not want LNG in Clatsop County or in Oregon.
