The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team after putting in another week of great work has received the pay off for their labor.
The last week of competition started with a mix-n-match in Ocosta with the other league teams. All of the wrestlers performed well with spectacular pins coming from Dylan Hansen at 285 and Brandon Burdick at 152.
"Our light weights, Blayne Edwards (103), Jesus Crawford (112) and Mason Mackey all went undefeated that night, even after bumping up a weight class apiece in an effort to find some competition," said Coach Matt Stacey.
Saturday saw the team split with the more advance members going to the big Castle Rock tourney and the younger members going to Kelso JV. Kelso was a good proving ground for the future with teams coming from as far away as Olympia.
"The Mules' future looks powerful," Stacey said. "Nate Cothren (145) put in a dominating performance pinning two of his three opponents on his way to first place."
Adam Vasion (152) also brought home a first place medal by winning in a hard fought match over time.
"Adam was just in better shape than the other kid,” Stacey said. "He just kept getting stronger as the other kid became more tired.”
Other medalists included Jesus Crawford, second at (112); Jessie Lee, second (145), Dylan Hansen, second (285), Mitch Vik fourth (130) and Jr. Ramirez fourth (160).
"Mitch fought probably the best match of his career, and at one point was ahead 13-5," Stacey said.
For the varsity team, Blayne Edwards finally found some competition at 103 in the finals at Castle Rock where he lost his only match so far this year. He came home with a second place and still retains the number one ranking in the state. Ben Miles also placed for the Mules at 140.
