The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team stumbled against two Central League opponents in action this past week.
On December 16, the visiting Adna Pirates threw a defensive blanket over the Mules and won 67-28. The Pirates took a 26-7 first quarter lead. The Mules played evenly in the 10-10 second quarter but faded in the second half.
Brianne Helms scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, and made four assists and four steals. Blaine Land added six points; Brieanna Olsen and Caitlin Nicolazzi each scored five, and Haylee Budd, Maya Stanley and Ellee Crouse each had two.
Land had nine rebounds, and Caitlin Nicolazzi grabbed eight. The Pirates had a 49-22 rebounding advantage.
The Mules made only 12 of 52 shots, 23 percent, and three of eight free throws, 38 percent. Adna made 26 of 79 shots, 33 percent, and 10 of 12 free throws, 83 percent.
The Mules had another hard evening Tuesday, losing 61-22 at Mossyrock. The Vikings led 13-8 after one quarter and outscored the Mules 19-5 in the second to take control of the game.
Land led the Mule scoring with six points; she also had a team high 10 rebounds. Budd and Nicolazzi each scored four, Olsen and Helms three each, and Stanley two. Helms had seven rebounds, Olsen five and Budd and Nicolazzi four each.
The Mules made eight of 42 shots, 19 percent, and six of 13 free throws, 46 percent. Mossyrock made 20 of 59 shots, 34 percent, and 18 of 29 free throws, 62 percent.
The Mules entertain Oroville next Wednesday and Kalama Thursday in a combined boys and girls day of action that starts with the girls junior varsity at 3 p.m., followed by the boys junior varsity, girls varsity and boys varsity.
