Comettes top Lady Mules for KM Trophy

The Naselle Comettes pulled out the defensive blanket in the third quarter to win a 43-29 victory over the Wahkiakum Lady Mules in the second Annual Girls KM Trophy Game last Thursday.

Visiting Naselle led 10-8 after one quarter and 20-17 at halftime in a tight defensive game.

In the third quarter, the Comettes outscored the Mules 12-2 to lead 32-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Comette Nichole Tarabochia led the scoring with 15 points. Also for the Comettes, Carley Kitzman scored eight, Taylor Wasmundt six, Haleigh See and Makenzie Matthews five each, and Katie Green and Victoria Corona two each.

For the Mules, Brieanna Olsen and Brianne Helms had nine apiece, Caitlin Nicolazzi four, Rachel Patching and Ellee Crouse three each, and Blaine Land one.

The Comettes made 15 of 53 shots, 28 percent, and 11 of 21 free throws, 52 percent. The Mules made 10 of 43 shots, 23 percent, and eight of 24 free throws, 33 percent.

"We need to improve on the offensive end," commented Mule Coach Tiffany Niemeyer. "We are getting good shot attempts; now we just need them to start falling."

The Mules won the junior varsity game 37-27.
