Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Roselyn S. Elliott of Woodburn died Nov. 19, 2010. She was born June 23, 1930 in Joseph Oregon to Ruth and S.E. Smutz.
Rose attended college at Eastern Oregon College of Education in La Grande, then went on to the University of Washington where she earned more than enough credits for a Bachelor’s Degree, but had to leave school to have her child before the credits from Oregon could be transferred. Years later she completed her education at St. Paul’s School of Theology and became a Methodist minister.
Rose’s mother, father and stepfather were all Methodist ministers, giving her a firm foundation in the church. Rev. Elliott served as pastor at a United Methodist church near Harrisonville, MO, associate chaplain at the Methodist Home for the Aged in Topeka, KA and worked at Topeka State Hospital in mental health and geriatrics before returning to Washington state and serving as pastor at the Allen-Blanchard United Methodist church, the Oakville United Methodist church, and the Rochester United Methodist church. Rose retired from the ministry on June 16, 1995. Prior to her career in the ministry she was active in the Skamokawa Methodist church and the Grays River Methodist church, both in Washington, while working as a secretary at the Western Wahkiakum Telephone Company.
Roselyn married John Kent Elliott, a fisherman, in June 1950. ‘Kent’ was chairman of the lower Band of Chinook Indians for most of his life. She drove log truck and operated the loading donkey for their small logging operation. After Kent’s passing, she remarried in August of 1997. Her second husband, Robert Adkins, was well known as a television kid show host, a DJ, and a local celebrity.
Roselyn is survived by her sister, Shirley Moffett, her sons Allen Elliott of Kelso WA, Layton Elliott of Woodburn OR and Lance Elliott of Pray MT, two grandsons, and three granddaughters. A daughter, Anita Ruth Elliott, preceded her in death.
Crown Memorial in Tualatin handled her final arrangements. Donations in her name may be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice.
Service will be December 12th, 2010 at 3pm, Woodburn United Methodist Church.
