What's Happening at the Fair?

“Turkey Bingo” November 19, J. A. Wendt Elementary School multi-purpose room, 6 p.m., see you there! This Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raiser is organized by Martha and Cheryl Backman. If you have the winning bingo card you will receive a turkey or a ham for your prize. Martha’s special raffle prize for this event is a Nintendo Wii game system. Sound like something you would like to win? Tickets are $1, purchase a pocketful and maybe you will win this great prize! We had many awesome raffle prizes donated to this fund raising event for our Fair by friends and local businesses also. Purchase a $1 ticket and you have a chance to win one of these nice prizes too. Be sure to bring a can of food Friday night and we will trade you a bingo card for it. The canned food collected will be donated to our local food banks. We will have snacks and soft drinks available to purchase while you play bingo to keep your energy up and your mind focused on winning! Bring your kids, friends and neighbors to this family event. All proceeds will go directly toward maintaining, improving and operating your 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair.

In January we will be choosing the 2011 Fair theme, if we pick the one you submitted, you will receive two fair passes and two Wahkiakum County Fair T-shirts. Send your theme entry to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O. Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647.

You know you have some great volunteers when you ask for help to move heavy appliances and they show up ready to go to work. We always hope for a dry winter but that’s probably not going to happen in our part of the country. Bill Chamberlain, Neil Beerbower, Jerry Ledtke, Jean Beerbower and I loaded up freezers, refrigerators, ice cream freezers, ice machines and electric stoves on to a 24 foot trailer, loaned to the Fairgrounds by Bill. The trailer is backed into the cow barn ready to be pulled to high ground if we have any threat of flooding. One more winter project off the to do list!

The T-building windows are secretly being finished and I know who the carpenter is. Thank you Debbie Twiet for stopping in and working on this project when you have a few hours between your other carpentry jobs!

It’s cold and wet, but that never stops a rummage sale from going on. This Saturday,10 a.m.-4 p.m., there will be a 4-H rummage sale in the youth building and a Fair Board book sale in the Exotic barn at the Fairgrounds. Jean Beerbower has a huge variety of books for sale at very reasonable prices. Pick out some great reading material to get you through the long winter months. Proceeds from Jean's sale go directly toward maintaining and operating the Wahkiakum County Fair.

In November we are planning to drain the Fairgrounds water pipes. Only self-contained motor homes, pull trailers and cab-over truck campers will be allowed to camp in the Fairgrounds Park after the pipes have been drained for the winter.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds or would like to camp at the fairgrounds park contact Fair Board President Becky Ledtke @ 795-3434 or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is December 8, 7 p.m., River Street Building Meeting Room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
