Mules pound the Light 41-8

The Wahkiakum Mule football team defeated the Vancouver Christian Light 41-8 to close out the 2010 regular football season last Friday.

The Mules finished the season 5-3 in league play, fourth place, 5-4 overall.

The Mules head to South Bend this Saturday for a matchup for the fourth place seed in the state playoffs.

Zach Pierce caught a pass from Lars Blix and turned it into a 52-yard scoring play for the Mules at the start of the game. Blix passed to Ryan Helms for a two point conversion and 8-0 Mule lead at 11:50 of the first quarter.

Pierce ran for a three-yard touchdown to start at 11:59 of the second quarter; Blix kicked the conversion for a 15-0 Mule lead. This opened the floodgate for the Mules.

Pierce and Blix combined for a 70-yard scoring play at 9:58 of the second quarter. Wyatt Parker scored on a 20-yard run at 5:45, and Blix passed to Helms for a seven-yard touchdown play at 1:02. The Mules led 35-0 at halftime.

The Mule varsity started the third quarter, and Cameron Elliott scored on an 11-yard run at 10:07 for a 41-0 Mule lead. After that, the Mule junior varsity took the field.

Vancouver Christian scored on a four-yard run at 8:20 of the fourth quarter.

The Mules piled up 64 rushing yards on 21 runs and 236 passing yards on 11 completions. They had nine first downs.

The Light had 13 first downs; 111 rushing yards on 29 runs and 62 passing yards on seven completions.

The Mules fumbled six times, losing one. They intercepted four Light passes.

Elliott carried the ball nine times for 48 yards, and Parker ran the ball three times for 40 yards. Brandon Fudge caught four passes for 60 yards; Pierce had two for 122 yards and two touchdowns; Parker caught two for 42 yards, and Helms, Blayne Edwards and Travis Wegdahl all caught a pass.

Blix completed nine of 12 attempts, with one interception, for 231 yards and three touchdowns. Seth Doumit completed two of four passes for five yards.

Parker and Kohl Bergseng were the Mules' leading tacklers with seven each. Fudge, Pierce, and Wegdahl each had five.

South Bend finished second in the Pacific League with a 5-1 record, 7-2 overall.

"They have a very good line," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen."We'll have to contain their running back, Ryan Vongmixay."
