Youth football team logs two victories

Wahkiakum Youth football came away with another big win October 9 against a much larger team, 13 to 8. We struggled getting our offense on track so we only rushed for 138 total yards with Hank Ferguson carrying the load,18 carries for 117 yards one touchdown and the extra point run. Zach Brown scored the other one following his blockers on a quarterback sweep for 10 yards early in the second quarter. Defensively we struggled and allowed 55 yards on five carries and the only touchdown Athletes Corner would score on their first possession. After that the defense put the clamps on their running game holding them to one net yard on14 more carries. Tyler Chevaliar, Brock Cothren, Michael Zurick, Nathan Dault and Parker Patching dominated the defensive line while the linebackers Kurtis Bergseng, Hank Ferguson (6 tackles), and Jordan Crawford (6 tackles) kept the runners from finding any running room. Zach Brown had a good game at safety with three tackles.

The team had another great outing October16 against the Castle Rock Whites coming away with a 24 to 0 victory. Hank Ferguson opened the scoring in the first quarter with an 11 yard run up the middle for an early six point lead. Ferguson scored again from 45 yards out only to have it called back from an illegal block. He carried the ball three straight times until he hit paydirt from seven yards out. Our backs ran well all night following great blocking of Tyler Chevaliar, Parker Patching, Nathan Dault, Kurtis Bergseng, Brock Cothren, Luke Brown, and Michael Zurick. With the Wahkiakum defense holding Castle Rock to seven yards in the first half, we were able to get another defensive stop and get the ball back with two minutes left in the half. Ferguson connected with Jordyn Crawford on a 40 yard halfback pass play to get another Wahkiakum touchdown putting us up 18 to 0 at the half. Castle Rock sustained a good drive in the third quarter to keep the ball away from us but that ended in a fumble that was recovered by Brock Cothren. Jordan Crawford ran a sweep 30 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter to finish the scoring. Crawford finished with five carries for 64 yards, Ferguson carried the ball 13 times for 136, Zach Brown had one carry for 15 yards, Luke Brown carried the ball twice for 24 yards and Dustin Niemala had 14 yards.
