Awareness of domestic violence must continue

To The Eagle:

Throughout this month of October, The Charlotte House hopes you have noticed the large purple ribbons lining Main Street and on various businesses as well as individual homes. As October and Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to an end, the ribbons will come down but our work to end violence against women, and to keep families and individuals safe continues. We hope the awareness continues as well.

Why is awareness important? Domestic violence continues to be misunderstood and shrouded in secrecy and shame. It is painful to think and talk about; it is even more painful to live with.

Through awareness, we can educate about a subject many people still don't understand. Awareness provides an opportunity for our community to send a message to suffering families, that they are not alone and help is available. Awareness provides an opportunity for all of us to address the issue by changing the way we respond to violence.

If you would like more information on this topic or would like to know how you can help someone you know, please call The Charlotte House. We have ideas and recommendations for getting the conversation started. We have trained advocates on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Simply call 360-795-6400 or toll free 1-866-795-9381 to speak with someone. If you are interested in hosting a presentation for a business or group, please call us. We have a variety of topics surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault that we would be happy to bring to your organization. We rely on community support and members to help raise awareness and respond to this issue.

Together, we can help.
