Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The arena surface received some serious attention last week! Neil Beerbower rototilled the whole arena (it took Neil over six hours) his goal is a uniform surface that is ideal for horse riding. We still need to add more dirt, sand and sawdust , then spend many hours driving tractor to get it just right. Before you ride, please spend a little time removing rocks from the arena. We have placed two big cans in the arena for riders to put the rocks into. If there is a 4-H club that could help remove the rocks please call me and we can pick a day to meet.
Judy Brawn, Howard Brawn, Kris Brawn and John Chance donated their fair premium checks back to the fair! We will use their donations to make our 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair even more interesting and entertaining. Thank-you!
At our last fair board meeting it was decided we need to form a Vendor Committee to help solve some of the problems that vendors have to deal with each year during fair. Dale and Denise Holt have been vendors for two years at our fair so they have experienced the winds and set up problems first hand. They shared many good ideas about how the fair vendors could be arranged and some ideas on how to deal with strong winds. Denise and three fair board members have formed a Vendor Committee and will start meeting in November to try to get these issues solved by our 2011 Fair. If you were a vendor at our fair and would like to come to this meeting, give me a call, I would be happy to notify you when this meeting date is set.
The fair board would like to thank Bill Chamberlain for fixing the hot water tank in the Grange Booth. We are very fortunate to have friends who volunteer to fix these problems that seem to pop up and need immediate attention. Thanks Bill!
The Wahkiakum County Fair Board will begin holding their meetings at the River Street Building Meeting Room in November. This building is located by the Wahkiakum P.U.D. building and our new meeting room is beside the WSU Extension Office. Complete meeting details are at the end of this column.
It’s “2011 Fair Theme Contest” time! Each year we ask our community to submit their ideas for a fair theme. If you would like to enter the “2011 Fair Theme Contest” please call 795-3480 or send your name, phone number and theme idea to E-mail: wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net or Address: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, Wa 98647. The Fair Board will select the most creative theme and award a prize to the contest winner in January. (Last years’ theme was “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams”.)
In November we are planning to drain the Fairgrounds water pipes. Only self-contained motor homes, pull trailers and cab-over truck campers will be allowed to camp in the Fairgrounds Park after the pipes have been drained for the winter.
The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds or would like to camp at the fairgrounds park contact Fair Board President Becky Ledtke @ 795-3434 or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.
The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is November 10th, 7:00 p.m., River Street Building Meeting Room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
