The Wahkiakum youth football team played a great home game in front of a good sized crowd on Saturday and came away with a convincing win over Swanson's Fuel.
Coordinator Kevin Patching said "the mini-Mules held Swanson's to 80 yards rushing and none passing. Defensive highlights were Jordan Crawford intercepting a pass that was tipped by Michael Zurick and Hank Ferguson recovering a fumble when Parker Patching crushed a Swanson runner in the backfield. Crawford led the team with eight tackles followed by Ferguson and Zurick with seven each, Patching six, and Kurtis Bergseng four.
The mini-Mules scored in the first quarter on a 22-yard run and a 65-yard run by Crawford and in the third quarter on a Ferguson 35-yard run. Patching kicked the two-point conversion on the first to attempts.
"We did not convert the PAT after the third touchdown because a penalty pushed us back, and the run failed, giving us a final of 22-0," Coach Patching said.
The young Mules amassed 329 yards on the ground with Ferguson carrying 10 for 80 yards, Crawford 12 for 200 yards, Zach Brown three for nine yards and Dustin Niemala five for 40 yards.
The team's record is 2-1 with a 13-0 win last week over Columbia Ford and an 18-6 loss the first week.
